The Unique of brocade weaving of Mong people in Mu Cang Chai

A Mong woman in Mu Cang Chai district said that weaving has long been associated with daily life. The weaving was passed on from generation to generation and this work brings a unique culture of Mong women.

Mong women weave in their free time.

Mong  people in Mu Cang Chai has many unique tradition in which weaving is one of attractive culture.

Mu Cang Chai is an extremely difficult upland district of Yen Bai province with a large number of ethnic minorities, Mong people accounts 91% the Mong people.

In 2019, the People's Committee of Yen Bai Province granted a certificate to recognize Brocade Weaving Village in De Thang village, Che Cu Nha commune, Mu Cang Chai district.

The village currently has 35 women participating in weaving. They take advantage of their free time do weaving. To create unique brocade products or costumes, it takes many stages and requires carefulness, skillful hands of Mong women. Brocade products when completed are decorated with different patterns and motifs, with the main colors such as white, red, yellow, green, purple ... creating a unique feature on the costumes of Mong people. It takes about more than 5 months to complete a costumes. Each costume costs VND 7-8 million dong, even VND 10 million dong.

Nowadays brocade weaving not only keeps and preserves traditional culture  but also create jobs and increase imcome for ethnic women.                                     

After subtracting expenses, each month each woman has additional income of 5-6 million VND for regular employees; 2-3 million VND for people working in free time. Long time ago, brocade products only serve for themselves, their families and heir for married women.

Nowadays, these products such as skirts, shirts, phone bags have become popular goods for domestic and foreign tourists.

In order to preserve the weaving for next generations, Mrs. Ninh had idea to combine with schools for teaching embroder for pupils. In 2019, there were 50 pupils learning embroider. Mrs. Ninh wants, in the coming time, the locality to coordinate with schools to open classes training embroiders for students in the villages, and she will directly teach them.

Mr. Khang A Hù, Vice President Commune of Che Cu Nha, recently the commune has encouraged households participating weaving villages to develop their families’ economy, preserve culture of Mong people in Mu Cang Chai….
