YBP - On the evening of February 14th, in Tram Tau district, the People's Committee of Yen Bai province organized the ceremony to announce the Decision and award the certificate of National Intangible Cultural Heritage for the “Gau Tao” Festival of the Mong people in Tram Tau, Van Chan, and Mu Cang Chai districts, Yen Bai Province.

Through the dedicated efforts in preserving, safeguarding, and promoting the traditional cultural values by the Party committees and government at all levels, from the provincial to the local levels; and with the profound respect and love for their heritage by the ethnic communities, especially the Mong people in Tram Tau, Mu Cang Chai, and Van Chan districts, the Gau Tao festival has become the 8th Intangible Cultural Heritage out of a total of 11 Intangible Cultural Heritages in Yen Bai province to be officially inscribed in the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritages by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Gau Tao Festival is one of the unique cultural expressions that reflect the spirituality and distinct beliefs of the Mong people. It is a significant festival that showcases the long-standing cultural traditions of the ethnic group, which have been maintained and preserved by the Mong community. Recognizing the importance of cultural heritage, Tram Tau district has consistently prioritized leadership and management in preserving, protecting, and promoting the value of cultural heritage within the context of socioeconomic development. This is seen as a vital task and one of the driving forces that create the district's identity and internal strength in its development process.

In addition to the national intangible cultural heritage of the Gau Tao Festival, the cluster of Keteleeria evelyniana in Tram Tau town and Xa Ho commune has been recognized as a Vietnam Heritage Tree. The recognition of Keteleeria evelyniana not only contributes to the conservation of gene pools and provides precious timber species for the country but also holds historical, scenic, and environmental value. It serves as an ecotourism destination, raises awareness about forest resource protection, and educates generations about the importance of preserving forests and the environment, as well as instilling the traditional value of remembering one's roots.

At the ceremony, the leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced Decision No. 2318/QĐ-BVHTTDL dated August 9, 2024, by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, recognizing the "Gau Tao Festival of the Mong People in Tram Tau, Van Chan, and Mu Cang Chai Districts, Yen Bai Province" as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Vietnam Heritage Tree Council also announced and awarded the Decision and Certificate of Heritage Tree to the Tram Tau District People's Committee for the cluster of Keteleeria evelyniana in Tram Tau town and Xa Ho commune.

The event to announce the Decision and award the certificate of national intangible cultural heritage for the "Gau Tao" Festival of the Mong people in Tram Tau, Van Chan, and Mu Cang Chai districts holds significant importance and is a great source of pride not only for the Mong people in Tram Tau, Mu Cang Chai, and Van Chan but also for all ethnic groups in Yen Bai Province. This occasion also serves to promote and widely introduce the content and cultural value of the Gau Tao Festival, thereby enhancing solidarity among ethnic groups and fostering sustainable cultural and tourism development between localities in the province and the Northwest region.
